Former Players M - R

pne2001

Many Players have graced the Deepdale playing surface, some good, some bad. We take a look back at some of these players. These are all players from the past. We have taken most the information from Wikipedia, and other internet site’s, although we have tried to make sure all the information is correct, some maybe slightly out. If you find any that is, please email us with the correct details and the proof and we will change it. If you would like to add a player you can send us the details and we will add the player. Remember they must be players from the past, not currently playing for PNE. Sir Tom Finney has not been added to the list as he has his own page (See NWCPNE Extra’s and Preston Plumber. Thanks.

Mears joined Preston in July 2002 for a fee of £200,000. He signed a three-year contract and was expected to provide cover for Gary Alexander. He made his debut for Preston as a substitute in a 3-3 draw with Walsall in October 2002 and went on to make a total of 24 league and cup appearances in the 2002-03 season as Preston finished in mid-table of the Football League Championship. He made only 14 appearances in the 2003-04 season and five in the 2004-05 season as a stress fracture put him out of the game for ten months. Despite his long-term injury, he was offered and signed a further three-year contract in March 2005, saying "I was out for 10 months so you worry about what is going to happen to you. You need to be in the team but Preston have been very good to me and I can't speak more highly of the manager. Last season to get the stress fracture was very hard but that's all behind me now and I'm looking forward to a fresh start with a three-year deal." He made 39 league and cup appearances in the 2005-06 season as Preston reached the Championship play-offs semi-final. During that season, instead of having his surname Mears on the back of his shirt, he had his nickname "Tye", a rare occurrence in English football. In July 2006, after rejecting two bids from Charlton, Preston accepted an offer for Mears from West Ham. He played 70 league games for PNE and scored 4 goals.

Preston lost that game, but Everton wanted Moyes and had to pay £2 million for him in 2002. Player 1993-1998, manager 1998 – 2002.

Signing on as an apprentice in July 1977, McAteer turned professional a year later. He made his Preston North End debut as an 18-year-old on Boxing Day 1979 in a 3-0 home win over Shrewsbury Town. Quickly establishing himself as a tough-tackling attacking full back, McAteer didn't miss a game for the rest of the season, becoming a firm Favourite with the Deepdale fans. The following season he struggled with injury but still managed to make 26 appearances as the club were relegated to Division Three. These were hard times for Preston, as they constantly struggled against relegation and financial ruin. McAteer, however, was a mainstay in the team making 277 appearances scoring nine goals during his first spell there. It was in December 1986 that John McGrath accepted a bid of £17,000 from local rivals Blackpool. McAteer played for the Seasiders for eighteen months. In June 1988 he was given a free transfer, mainly due to an injury-plagued second season. He had made 47 appearances and scored 0 times at Bloomfield Road. John McGrath wasted no time in offering McAteer a return to Preston, offering him, in July 1988, a two-year deal. Injury, however, restricted him to just 19 more games for North End as they pushed towards the play-offs. Halfway through his deal it was decided that McAteer couldn't continue with the rigours of the full-time game any longer and he retired from the professional game at the relatively young age of 28. He had played 343 games in his career, scoring 10 goals. In total he made 250 appearances for PNE and scored 9 goals, as a Full Back

Brian Mooney - born 2 February 1966

With newly promoted Preston North End struggling in the English third division manager John McGrath brought in both Brian and Tony Ellis with Brian initially on a months loan. Both players were an instant success with Brian becoming the darling of the Deepdale terraces. At the end of his loan spell Liverpool agreed to sell Brian for the moderate fee of £25,000. The next three and a half years were for Brian a very successful period with his undoubted natural ability attracting the attention of many top flight clubs and the eye of Republic of Ireland boss Jack Charlton. In all Brian played 128 games for Preston scoring 26 goals and was named the clubs official player of the year in 1988-89. He played for Preston between 1987 and 1991, playing 128 league games and scoring 20 goals.

In the last minute of extra time of the match, which was shown on television for the first time, Mutch was fouled. He scored the resulting penalty kick, which rebounded off the underside of the bar, to win the match for Preston North End. Mutch is remembered for one incident in this FA Cup Final.

N

David James Nugent born 2 May 1985

David Nugent

Although a target for rivals Burnley, Nugent opted to join Preston North End rather than Northampton Town from Bury in January 2005 for a fee of £100,000 and proved himself more than worthy at Championship level. He scored 10 league goals in 32 Championship appearances in 2005-06, as Preston finished fourth, losing to Leeds United in the playoff semi-final, thus failing to gain promotion. Despite transfer speculation, Nugent spent the following season at Preston, scoring 15 goals in 43 appearances, and winning England recognition. Preston finished seventh in 2006-07. Nugent left Preston during the summer of 2007. Nugent Became the First player to play for England since Sir Tom Finney and scored on his debut, coming on with 3 minutes to go and scoring a tap in. He played 94 league games for PNE and scored 33 league goals.

Carlo James Nash - born 13 September 1973

Moved down a division from the Premier League to join Preston North End in 2005, played 82 games. He set a club record of 24 clean sheets with Preston North End during the 2005-06 season, as Preston conceded fewer goals than champions Reading. But he left in controversy. In July 2006 he angered the club's support and management by stating on his personal web site that Preston North End's ambition did not match that of his own. He continued to play as first choice for the club until January 2007 when Fulham contacted him over a proposed move to the London club. Nash went straight to the press about the issue, claiming his London based fiancée was the reason he wanted to leave and asked Preston to accept a reported £500,000 bid for his services. However Preston chairman Derek Shaw denied there was a bid that would allow the club to adequately replace him. Nash was subsequently dropped to the bench for Preston's next game and replaced with Andrew Lonergan. As such, it became likely that his future lay away from Deepdale especially as Preston also signed Republic of Ireland keeper Wayne Henderson from Brighton and Hove Albion for £150k and extended young keeper Chris Neal's contract until June 2010 effectively making Nash 4th choice keeper. Nash joined Wigan Athletic on a month long emergency loan in February 2007, due to injuries to their first and second choice keepers. Following the conclusion of that loan deal, Nash returned to Preston, where he was transfer listed on May 8, 2007. Wigan signed him permanently for £300,000 on 27 June 2007.

His final game for Preston was another Play-Off defeat, this time in the 2006 semi-final to Leeds United at the end of the 2005/2006 season before injury called time on his career. He was well-regarded by many of the fans at Deepdale. O'Neil played for his country seven times in all. He won a recall to the squad after five years away for Walter Smith's Scotland squads in the early part of 2005. He won his last cap against Austria in a 2-2 draw in August 2005

Hugh O'Donnell - born 15 February 1913 / died 9 May 1965

Hugh like his brother Frank signed from Celtic in 1935. He played 132 league games and scored 29 goals. Like his brother Hugh’s last game was an FA Cup Final, but it was a year later in 1938. Unlike his brother, Hugh left Deepdale with a Winning Medal to goto the losers medal they both earned in 1937.

Francis O'Farrell - born 9 October 1927

In November 1956, O’Farrell left West ham for Preston North End in a straight swap deal involving Eddie Lewis (not the American that did the dirty on Preston and joined Leeds). He was still with the Lancashire club when they finished runners-up to Wolverhampton Wanderers in Division One at the end of the 1957-58 season. Ironically, that same campaign O'Farrell's former team-mates at West Ham finished as Second Division Champions, at last securing their promotion to Division One, the goal he had strived so hard to help achieve. Paul Raynor - born 29 April 1966

Don’t have much information about Paul Raynor, although he became a Preston hero in 1994 Play off Semi Final against Torquay, scoring with a diving header, in the last minute of Extra-time. The Goal took PNE to Wembley, but Preston failed to win. Paul was also the last player to score on the Famous Deepdale Plastic Pitch with this goal.

Jimmy Ross - born 28 March 1866 / died 12 June 1902

jimmyross

Preston North End's Scottish striker scored 19 FA Cup goals in one season (1887-88) and it remains a record for the competition. The 26-0 win against Hyde in the First Round is still The Cup's biggest and Ross weighed in with eight goals. He also grabbed six as they saw off Bolton 9-1 in the Fourth Round but didn't score in the Final at Kennington Oval, which Preston lost to West Brom.
